Boston is experiencing a shift in weather conditions on March 17, with the sun expected to be visible after a day of heavy rain and strong winds on March 16. Temperatures are projected to be in the low to mid 40s, but winds will continue to be a concern, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph.
The previous day saw peak wind gusts between 55 and 65 mph, which resulted in significant power outages across the region. As of 6 am on March 17, approximately 60,000 people were reported to be without power. The severe weather also led to hundreds of flight cancellations and delays at Boston’s Logan Airport.
In addition to the weather-related disruptions, the situation has been exacerbated by a government shutdown that has affected TSA staffing levels. Reports indicate that over 300 TSA officers have walked off the job nationwide, with 30 of those from New England. This has raised concerns about airport security and travel safety.
Rick Tischler, a parent of one of the affected TSA agents, expressed his frustration, stating, “I’m exhausted. My son is one of them.” Mike Gayzagian, a TSA representative, noted that many officers are leaving the agency due to financial pressures, saying, “A lot of people, unfortunately, are making the decision to quit the agency because they have to find a job that pays them.”
As the weather clears, the forecast indicates that temperatures will drop into the mid 20s overnight on March 17, with highs on March 18 expected to only reach the mid to upper 30s. However, a rebound is anticipated, with highs reaching the mid 40s on March 19 and potentially hitting the low 50s on March 20, marking the first day of Spring.
Travelers and residents alike are advised to remain vigilant as conditions may still change rapidly. Seth Miller, a travel expert, cautioned, “Things could get bad in a hurry, and the worst part is we don’t necessarily know if it’s going to happen until we’re already there.”
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the impact on travel and power restoration efforts, but officials are working to address the ongoing challenges.
