Upcoming Elections and Student Engagement
The Student Government Association (SGA) at CU Denver is preparing for elections for the fall 2026 term, which are set to take place this spring. SGA is composed of approximately 20 elected student members who represent the interests of CU Denver students across five committees. Members serve one academic year and are compensated for their roles.
In recent developments, nine student leaders from Arkansas Tech University (ATU) participated in the 2026 Student Government Day at the State Capitol in Little Rock, Arkansas. This event provided an opportunity for these leaders to engage with state officials and learn more about the workings of government.
Meetings with State Officials
During their visit, the ATU student leaders met with Secretary of State Cole Jester and Arkansas Supreme Court Justice Nicholas Bronni. These interactions allowed the students to gain insights into the political landscape and the importance of civic engagement.
Jaime Land and Kevin Solomon accompanied the ATU leaders, further enriching the experience by providing guidance and support. Student leader Carson Smith remarked, “Getting to hear their stories and the path they took to get where they are now helped me see how I could implement those things into my education and my professional career so I can get where they are.” This reflects the value of mentorship and learning from experienced leaders.
Significance of SGA Initiatives
SGA has been proactive in addressing student needs, having supported a Mental Health and Wellbeing Fee that was passed in a student vote in 2025. This initiative demonstrates SGA’s commitment to enhancing student welfare and fostering a supportive campus environment.
Jared Bynum, a member of SGA, expressed his personal growth through involvement, stating, “I showed up thinking I was going to find a community, but really I have gotten an opportunity to challenge myself to be a better leader.” Similarly, Carla Gutierrez noted, “It makes you feel good that you are bringing something to the campus,” highlighting the positive impact of student leadership.
As elections approach, the SGA continues to play a vital role in representing student interests and advocating for important initiatives. The engagement of student leaders at the State Capitol underscores the importance of student voices in the broader political discourse.
Overall, the current activities and initiatives of the SGA are crucial for fostering a vibrant student community and ensuring that student perspectives are heard in decision-making processes.
