Nick Cross Signs with Washington Commanders

Nick Cross is set to join the Washington Commanders on a two-year deal worth up to $14 million, marking a significant move in his professional career. This signing comes after Cross’s tenure with the Indianapolis Colts, where he played a total of 68 games and made 37 starts.

Drafted by the Colts as the No. 96 overall pick in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Cross has established himself as a reliable strong safety. Over his career with the Colts, he recorded impressive statistics, including 322 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, five interceptions, and 12 pass deflections.

In the 2025 season, Cross showcased his skills by appearing in all 17 games and accumulating 120 total tackles. His base salary for that year was $3.4 million, reflecting his performance under the Proven Performance Escalator. However, his production in coverage saw a decline according to Pro Football Focus metrics, which may have influenced the Colts’ decision to let him go.

The Colts had recently signed Cam Bynum to a significant contract, further complicating Cross’s position on the team. Additionally, the organization appears to be optimistic about second-year safety Hunter Wohler, indicating a shift in their defensive strategy.

Cross’s increased usage as a blitzer in 2025 suggests a tactical adjustment, but it also may have contributed to the Colts’ decision to move on from him. His deal with the Commanders did not break the bank, hinting that the Colts were prepared for this transition.

As Cross embarks on this new chapter with the Washington Commanders, observers will be watching closely to see how he adapts to his new team and role. The details of his contract and how he fits into the Commanders’ defensive scheme remain to be fully confirmed.
