In the fall of 2026, the college enrolled only 168 new students, falling short of its target of 300.
As the college grapples with these challenges, its endowment, valued at approximately $26.5 million, includes $23.5 million in restricted funds, limiting its financial flexibility. The New England Commission of Higher Education placed Hampshire on show cause status, highlighting concerns about its fiscal resources.
William “Wolfie” Krebs, a current student, reflected on the college’s impact, stating, “I hope it’s not seen as a failure, because it wasn’t. It’s brought so much influence into the world and into the community, the immediate area.” This sentiment echoes the feelings of many who have called Hampshire home over the years.
Joan Priester, a sophomore at the college, added, “I think really the death of Hampshire College is kind of a reflection of the current conditions of the times, the material conditions of the economy faltering and of the social fabric of America deteriorating.” Her words encapsulate the broader implications of the college’s closure, resonating with the struggles faced by many institutions across the country.
Despite the impending closure, final-year students will be allowed to complete their degrees at Hampshire, while other students will have transfer options to partner institutions, including Amherst College and Smith College. This transition aims to support students during this challenging time.
