A late spring snowstorm has caused widespread school closures across Colorado on May 6, affecting major districts including Denver Public Schools and Colorado State University. Over 120 schools reported cancellations due to hazardous travel conditions.
The storm brought significant snowfall, with forecasts predicting between 5 to 8 inches along the I-25 Corridor and up to 12 inches near the foothills. This inclement weather prompted numerous districts to take precautionary measures for the safety of students and staff.
Key school closures include:
- Denver Public Schools
- Poudre School District
- Colorado State University
- Thompson School District
- Weld RE-4 School District
- Littleton Public Schools
- JeffCo Public Schools
- Boulder Valley School District
- Douglas County School District
- Aurora Public Schools
In addition to K-12 institutions, Front Range Community College canceled in-person classes while continuing online courses as scheduled. Classes were also suspended at several elementary schools due to unsafe transportation conditions.
The storm’s impact extended beyond education; it left over 28,000 Xcel Energy customers without power and caused approximately 500 flight delays at Denver International Airport. A winter storm warning remained in effect from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon.
Officials from various districts emphasized the importance of safety. A spokesperson for Denver Public Schools stated, “The state’s largest district joined other major districts to cancel classes due to severe weather.” Meanwhile, Littleton Public Schools echoed similar sentiments regarding their closure.
