Government Shutdown Impacts Travel
The partial government shutdown, which began on February 14, 2026, is causing significant disruptions at major airports across the United States, particularly in New Orleans, Houston, and Chicago.
TSA agents have been working without pay since the shutdown commenced, leading to long security lines that have frustrated travelers. At Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, travelers faced extreme delays, prompting airport officials to advise arriving at least three hours before departure.
In Houston, the situation is similarly dire, with travelers reporting waits of up to three hours to get through security. Some individuals have even missed their flights due to the extensive delays. Reports indicate that customs processing lines at O’Hare International Airport stretched almost the length of Terminal 5.
New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno has attributed the long lines at the airport to a lack of funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The DHS has placed blame on Democrats for not agreeing to funding bills, while Democrats counter that the federal government has failed to reach an agreement on immigration enforcement policy reforms.
As the shutdown continues, travelers are left to navigate the chaos. One traveler in New Orleans expressed their frustration, stating, “I think that it makes me feel really depressed when it affects people that want to come to this amazing city, and they just want to have fun, and they want to end their trip on a good note.”
The ongoing situation highlights the broader implications of the government shutdown, which has affected multiple airports and led to long security lines and delays nationwide. Travelers are urged to remain patient and plan accordingly as the shutdown persists.
