Ramaswamy, who previously gained national recognition as a Republican presidential candidate, has invested $25 million of his own money into his campaign, which has raised an impressive total of $30 million. He recently secured the Republican nomination after defeating Casey Putsch in the primary. His running mate, Rob McColley, will join him as they head into the general election.
On the Democratic side, Amy Acton—who served as Ohio’s public health director during the COVID-19 pandemic—won her nomination without opposition. Acton’s running mate, David Pepper, will accompany her on the ballot. With no Democrat having held the governorship in Ohio for 20 years, this election could mark a significant turning point.
Ramaswamy’s campaign is expected to be one of the most expensive in Ohio’s history. The lingering anger over COVID-19 restrictions plays a crucial role in his strategy. “Are we choosing freedom or are we choosing Fauci?” asked Zac Haines, a supporter who resonates with Ramaswamy’s messaging.
Despite his financial backing and national name recognition, Ramaswamy faces challenges. Critics accuse him of playing politics with COVID-19 issues. However, he defends his stance: “As a decision maker, you have to weigh the costs and benefits of your actions,” he stated during a recent rally.
While Ramaswamy aims to capitalize on dissatisfaction with previous restrictions, Acton touts her record of prioritizing public health over politics. “Dr. Acton is proud of the work she did alongside Governor DeWine to put public health over politics, save lives and keep Ohioans safe,” said Addie Bullock, an advocate for Acton.
The stakes are high as both candidates prepare for what observers believe could be a defining election in Ohio’s political landscape.
