For over 54 years, Harpeth True Value Home Center has stood as a cornerstone of the Franklin community, providing essential home improvement supplies and fostering local connections. However, as of April 1, 2026, this beloved store will close its doors permanently, a decision that reflects the harsh realities of today’s retail environment.

The closure comes as a decisive moment for the store, which has struggled to adapt to the changing landscape dominated by large chains and online platforms. Financial realities have taken a toll, with lumber sales, which accounted for 70% to 80% of the store’s revenue, dwindling in recent years. Owner Mike Outlaw’s attempts to sell the business were unsuccessful, leaving him with no choice but to close.

In a heartfelt message to the community, Harpeth True Value expressed gratitude for the loyalty shown over the decades. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for welcoming us into your lives for more than 50 years,” the store stated, emphasizing the deep connections formed with local customers.

Mike Outlaw shared his disappointment, stating, “I did everything I could do to find a buyer, but this is the last thing I wanted to do: close the business.” The impact of True Value’s bankruptcy in 2024 likely contributed to the store’s declining sales, as the perception of instability affected customer confidence.

As the retail landscape shifts, larger competitors like Home Depot, which controlled 28% of the market in 2025, and Lowe’s with 17%, continue to dominate, leaving little room for independent stores. Amazon’s growing presence, with an 11% market share, further complicates the situation for local businesses.

Experts note that the closure of Harpeth True Value is not an isolated incident but part of a broader trend affecting small, independent businesses across the country. “Like many small, independent businesses across the country, financial realities and the changing retail landscape have made it impossible for us to continue,” the store lamented.

The loss of Harpeth True Value serves as a poignant reminder of the true value that local businesses bring to communities. As residents of Franklin bid farewell to a cherished institution, they are left to reflect on the importance of supporting local enterprises in an increasingly corporate world.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding potential future developments for the location, but the community’s spirit remains strong as they navigate this significant change.
