“Consumers should stop using the recalled Food Jars and Bottles immediately and contact Thermos to receive a free replacement pressure relief stopper or replacement Bottle, depending on the model,” said a representative from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This urgent recall affects more than 8 million food jars and bottles due to a defect in the product’s stopper that can cause it to eject forcefully.
The recall includes approximately 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and 2.3 million Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles. Consumers have reported serious injuries, with three individuals suffering permanent vision loss after being struck by an ejected stopper. The CPSC has received 27 reports of injuries related to this issue.
The recalled models feature stoppers that lack a pressure-relief mechanism, allowing dangerous pressure to build up inside the containers. This design flaw poses significant risks when perishable food or beverages are stored for extended periods. According to the CPSC, “If perishable food or beverages are stored in the container for an extended period of time, the stopper can forcefully eject when opened, which can result in serious impact injury and laceration hazards to the consumer.”
The affected products were sold at major retailers like Target and Walmart from March 2008 through July 2024, with prices averaging around $30. The models included in this recall are SK3000 (16 oz), SK3020 (24 oz), and SK3010 (40 oz).
Consumers are strongly advised to cease using these products immediately and reach out to Thermos for replacements. As this situation develops, Thermos aims to ensure food storage safety by addressing these critical design flaws.
