Southwest Airlines unveiled its ‘Independence One’ aircraft on April 29, 2026, at Philadelphia International Airport, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. The aircraft showcases a striking red, white, and blue design that honors the spirit of the nation.

The special tail number ‘1776’ pays homage to the year of American independence. The aircraft also features significant phrases like ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,’ alongside thirteen stars representing the original colonies. This unique design reflects not only the airline’s heritage but also its commitment to connecting communities.

On its inaugural flight from Dallas to Philadelphia, Independence One received a celebratory water cannon reception. Bob Jordan, CEO of Southwest Airlines, expressed pride in being part of this historic celebration. He stated, “Southwest is proud to be a part of the 250th national celebration and to honor the same spirit of innovation, resilience, and optimism that has shaped our country and our Company.”

As the official airline for America250, Southwest Airlines plans to invest up to $250,000 in volunteerism initiatives throughout the year. In 2025 alone, Southwest employees contributed an impressive 180,000 hours of volunteer service. Rosie Rios from America250 highlighted how this initiative reflects the spirit of freedom and opportunity that defines America.

Key facts about Independence One:

  • The aircraft features a red, white, and blue paint scheme with ‘1776’ written in giant quill script.
  • The phrase ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ is included on the aircraft.
  • Thirteen stars on the fuselage denote the thirteen original colonies.
  • The aircraft has a special ‘1776’ tail number.

This initiative not only marks an important milestone for Southwest Airlines but also emphasizes its ongoing mission to foster volunteerism within communities across America. As Jordan put it, “It’s a symbol of what it means to give America the freedom to fly.” The airline’s legacy continues as it serves over 121 airports nationwide and carried 134 million customers in 2025.

Independence One will make special stops throughout the year as part of various celebrations marking this significant anniversary. Further details about upcoming events are expected as Southwest Airlines continues its commitment to community engagement and support.
