In the lead-up to the NCAA Tournament, expectations were high for both South Florida and Louisville. South Florida, entering as the eleventh seed, had been riding a remarkable 11-game winning streak, while Louisville, the sixth seed, was looking to break a streak of three consecutive tournament losses since 2017.

The decisive moment came on March 19, 2026, in Buffalo, NY, where Louisville narrowly defeated South Florida 83-79. This victory marked Louisville’s first NCAA Tournament win since 2017, a significant milestone for the team and its supporters.

Louisville held a commanding 62-39 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining in the game, but South Florida showcased their resilience, with Joseph Pinion scoring an impressive 27 points, including 22 in the second half. Despite their efforts, South Florida’s early struggles with shooting—missing 20 of their first 21 three-point attempts—proved costly.

On the other hand, Louisville’s performance was marred by a season-high 22 turnovers, which South Florida capitalized on, converting those mistakes into 22 points. Isaac McKneely led the Cardinals with 23 points, demonstrating the team’s ability to score despite the turnovers.

Joseph Pinion reflected on the game, stating, “Obviously we put ourselves in a hole, but I thought we battled back really hard on that run.” This sentiment encapsulates the spirit of South Florida’s fight, even as their winning streak came to a halt.

Louisville’s head coach, Pat Kelsey, described the final moments of the game as “the longest 10 minutes of my life,” highlighting the tension that filled the arena as South Florida made a late push. Bryan Hodgson, a key figure for South Florida, acknowledged the shooting struggles, saying, “I know the critics will say we took too many 3s. I think we missed some really good ones.”

As the tournament progresses, Louisville is set to face Michigan State in the next round, while South Florida will regroup after this tough loss. The outcome of this game not only shifts the momentum for both teams but also serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of March Madness.

With Louisville’s victory, the Cardinals look to build on this success, while South Florida aims to learn from this experience and return stronger in future competitions. The journey continues for both teams, each with their own aspirations and challenges ahead.
