In the past, California REALTORS® faced challenges in making their voices heard at the federal level, often feeling disconnected from the legislative processes that directly impacted their work and the communities they serve. The expectation was that local issues would remain local, with little influence on national policy.
However, a decisive moment arrived on March 23, 2026, when California REALTORS® gathered on Capitol Hill to advocate for crucial housing reforms. This annual advocacy trip marked a significant shift, as the group focused on pressing issues such as the capital gains tax and the More Homes on the Market Act.
During their meetings, the California Association of REALTORS® emphasized the importance of streamlining regulations and incentivizing local development. This proactive approach aimed to address the urgent need for housing affordability, which has been recognized as a national issue transcending partisan lines.
Mark Peterson, the President-Elect of the California Association of REALTORS®, and Tamara Suminski, the current President, led the charge in these discussions. “Our annual advocacy trip to Washington, D.C., is about ensuring California REALTORS® have a strong voice at the federal level,” Suminski stated, highlighting the significance of their presence.
The group met with members of the California Congressional Delegation, including prominent figures like Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff. They shared stories from the field, illustrating the realities faced by buyers, sellers, and renters in California.
As the discussions unfolded, it became clear that the advocacy efforts were not just about policy changes but also about fostering relationships and understanding between REALTORS® and lawmakers. Suminski expressed, “It blows my mind that we can make a difference, that we get to speak our members’ voice, tell the stories from the street… face-to-face with the members who make the legislation that impact us on a daily basis.”
This collaborative spirit was echoed by Evan Liddiard, the NAR director of tax policy, who emphasized the need for bipartisan cooperation in tackling housing issues. The advocacy trip served as a platform for REALTORS® to ensure their concerns are addressed at the highest levels of government.
As California REALTORS® continue to advocate for meaningful reforms, the impact of their efforts will be closely watched by both the real estate community and the broader public. The hope is that these discussions will lead to tangible changes that enhance housing affordability and accessibility for all.
With a commitment to representing their members and the communities they serve, California REALTORS® are poised to make a lasting impact on housing policy, ensuring that their voices are heard loud and clear in Washington, D.C.
