As the sun sets on the regular NHL season, anticipation fills the air. April 18, 2026, marks the beginning of the Stanley Cup playoffs—a thrilling time for fans across North America. This year, 16 teams will compete in a best-of-seven series format, including some familiar faces and a few newcomers.

The playoffs commence just two days after the conclusion of the regular season. Among them, the Buffalo Sabres are making waves as they return to playoff action for the first time since 2011. Their impressive record of 50-23-9 has rekindled hope in a city that has longed for postseason glory.

In their first-round matchup, the Sabres face off against the Boston Bruins, who finished with a solid record of 45-27-10. The Bruins boast David Pastrnak as their leading scorer, racking up 29 goals and an impressive 71 assists this season. Yet, it’s Tage Thompson—leading scorer for Buffalo with 40 goals and 41 assists—who has become a beacon of hope for Sabres fans.

Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Lightning will clash with their historic rivals, the Montreal Canadiens. The Lightning come into this matchup with a strong record of 50-26-6 and Nikita Kucherov leading their scoring charge with an astounding 44 goals and 86 assists. The Canadiens, however, have Nick Suzuki stepping up with his own impressive tally of 29 goals and 72 assists.

But not all is familiar this year; notably absent from playoff contention are the Florida Panthers—the reigning champions who won the Stanley Cup against Edmonton just last season. This absence marks a significant shift in the league’s dynamics as it opens up opportunities for new champions to emerge.

Notably favored to win it all this year are the Colorado Avalanche. With a phenomenal record of 55-16-11 during the regular season, they enter these playoffs with high expectations and hopes riding on their talented roster.

The first round also features other exciting matchups: Carolina Hurricanes vs. Ottawa Senators and Minnesota Wild vs. Vegas Golden Knights. Each series promises intense competition as teams vie for a coveted spot in the next round.

As fans gear up for this thrilling playoff journey, communities rally around their teams—each game becoming a shared experience that unites friends and families alike. The stakes are high; every goal scored resonates not just on ice but within homes across cities like Buffalo and Boston. This year’s playoffs are more than just hockey—they symbolize hope and resilience for fans who have waited years to see their teams shine on this grand stage.
