For nearly two decades, the NBA has maintained a steady roster of 30 teams, with no new franchises added since 2004. Fans in cities like Seattle, which once hosted the SuperSonics, have longed for a return of professional basketball, while Las Vegas has emerged as a vibrant hub for the sport, hosting the NBA Summer League for over 20 years.

However, a decisive moment arrived when the NBA Board of Governors voted to explore potential team expansion to these two cities. This vote reflects a renewed interest in markets that have shown a strong history of support for NBA basketball, as noted by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

The financial implications of this expansion are significant. Reports suggest that expansion fees could range between $7 billion and $10 billion per franchise. If the NBA decides to add teams, each existing owner could receive approximately $200 million, a substantial boost to their investments.

Seattle’s excitement is palpable, with local advocates like Katie Wilson declaring, “Seattle is ready to welcome the Sonics home. We never stopped being a basketball city, and the fans have never given up.” This sentiment resonates deeply within a community that has long cherished its basketball legacy.

Conversely, the NBA’s future decisions remain uncertain. While the league could opt to add one team, two teams, or none at all, the final decision is expected by the end of 2026. Adam Silver has acknowledged that there is a chance expansion may not happen, leaving fans and potential investors in a state of anticipation.

As the league evaluates its options, the involvement of investment bank PJT Partners signifies a serious commitment to exploring these markets. The NBA’s current structure allows for a media rights revenue share of 1/30 for each team, which could shift to 1/32 if two new teams are added.

With 30 governors on the board, a minimum of 23 votes is required to approve any expansion. The dynamics of this decision will undoubtedly impact the future of the league and the communities involved.

As the discussions unfold, the excitement in both Las Vegas and Seattle continues to grow, with community leaders and fans alike rallying for the chance to see their cities represented in the NBA once more. Details remain unconfirmed, but the potential for a new chapter in NBA history is on the horizon.
