“What I love about this is that it’s so specific to the Philadelphia community,” said Michael Empric, reflecting on the vibrant celebrations surrounding National Cheesesteak Day. This beloved event, celebrated annually on March 24, showcases the city’s deep-rooted passion for its iconic sandwich.
In a delightful twist this year, Philadelphia International Airport set a Guinness World Record for the “Longest Line of Cheesesteaks,” measuring an impressive 1,200 feet. The line featured almost a thousand pounds of ribeye steak and 225 pounds of cheese, bringing together locals and visitors alike in a shared love for this culinary staple.
“The airport is really the entry point for everybody coming into the city,” noted Dana Krawchuk, emphasizing the significance of the event in welcoming newcomers to Philadelphia’s rich food culture.
Local favorites like Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks are joining the festivities with special promotions. Pat’s King of Steaks is offering free fries with any cheesesteak purchased between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., while Geno’s Steaks has a deal where customers can buy four cheesesteaks and receive the fifth one for free.
Other participating establishments are also getting in on the action. Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop is providing a buy-one-get-one 50% off deal, and Hot Table is offering $5 small cheesesteak paninis in-store only. Philly’s Best is discounting their Cooper Classic cheesesteak by $2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Texadelphia is serving buy-one-get-one-free cheesesteaks.
G’s Cheesesteaks is particularly generous this year, handing out free sandwiches from 1 to 3 p.m., inviting everyone to partake in the joy of National Cheesesteak Day.
Reflecting on the community aspect of the event, Empric added, “To do this in the airport and to donate so many of the cheesesteaks to TSA is really incredible.” This spirit of giving highlights the warmth and camaraderie that National Cheesesteak Day fosters among Philadelphians.
National Cheesesteak Day originated in 1994 when four Philadelphia high school friends celebrated their love for cheesesteaks, and it has since grown into a cherished tradition that unites the community.
As the day unfolds, locals and visitors alike are encouraged to indulge in the delicious offerings and celebrate the unique flavors that Philadelphia has to offer. With a variety of promotions and events, National Cheesesteak Day continues to be a testament to the city’s culinary heritage and community spirit.
