On March 28, 2026, the Michigan Wolverines women’s basketball team made history by defeating the Louisville Cardinals 71-52 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. This victory marks Michigan’s second-ever appearance in the Elite Eight, a significant milestone for the program and its dedicated fans.

The game began with both teams battling fiercely, but Michigan found its rhythm just before halftime. They ended the first half on a remarkable 20-2 run, showcasing their defensive prowess and offensive efficiency. This momentum carried into the third quarter, where they extended their lead with an 18-0 run, leaving Louisville struggling to catch up.

Leading the charge for Michigan was Olivia Olson, who scored 19 points, demonstrating her scoring ability and leadership on the court. Syla Swords contributed significantly as well, adding 16 points to the scoreboard. The Wolverines’ performance was not just about scoring; Brooke Quarles Daniels stood out with nine rebounds, seven of which were offensive, highlighting the team’s tenacity on the boards.

Michigan shot an impressive 47% from the field, while Louisville managed only 35%, a testament to the Wolverines’ strong defensive strategy. Head coach Kim Barnes Arico expressed her excitement after the game, stating, “We’re excited to still be playing. I think we have an incredible team, and the country got to see them on display today.”

This victory is particularly meaningful as it marks Michigan’s first Elite Eight appearance since 2021, reigniting hope and enthusiasm among fans and players alike. The Wolverines will now prepare to face the winner of the upcoming matchup between 1-seed Texas and 5-seed Kentucky in the Fort Worth-3 regional final, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, March 30.

Syla Swords added to the excitement, saying, “We’re a really fun brand of basketball to watch.” With their dynamic play style and determination, the Wolverines have captured the hearts of their community and are poised to make a deeper run in the tournament.

As the team looks ahead, the support from their fans will be crucial in this next phase of the tournament. The journey to the Elite Eight has not only showcased their skills but has also strengthened the bond within the team and the community that rallies behind them.
