Mackenzie Gunther was a recent graduate who began his professional flying career through the Jazz Aviation Pathways Program. On March 22, 2026, Gunther was the first officer on Air Canada Express Flight 8646, which tragically crashed at LaGuardia Airport shortly after landing.
The flight, which was arriving from Montreal, collided with a fire truck, resulting in the deaths of both pilots, including Gunther. There were 72 passengers onboard, and the heroic actions of the pilots were credited with minimizing the impact of the crash, ultimately saving many lives.
Gunther graduated from the Honours Bachelor of Aviation Technology program at Seneca Polytechnic in 2023 and was employed by Jazz Aviation immediately after graduation. His school expressed their sorrow, stating, “Seneca sends our deepest condolences to Mr. Gunther’s family and friends, and to his former colleagues and professors. He will be deeply missed.” Flags at Seneca’s campuses will be flown at half-mast on March 24 to honor his memory.
In the aftermath of the crash, more than 40 people were taken to area hospitals due to injuries, highlighting the severity of the incident. Witnesses and survivors have shared their gratitude for the pilots’ efforts. Rebecca Liquori, a passenger on the flight, remarked, “I’m just so appreciative that they were able to save us, but I’m just so sad that they weren’t able to make it home to their families.”
Joseph, another survivor, added, “They deserve all the credit for being heroes that day.” The community is coming together to remember Gunther and his contributions to aviation, as well as to support those affected by this tragic event.
Gunther’s family and friends are mourning the loss of a promising young pilot who was deeply loved and respected. Cedric Forest, a family member, poignantly stated, “Have a good flight, my brother! Oh yes, we’ve heard that phrase so many times, but this time, it’ll be the last.” The outpouring of grief reflects the impact Gunther had on those around him.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash, the aviation community and Gunther’s loved ones are left to navigate this profound loss. Observers are hopeful that the investigation will lead to improvements in safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
