Lammes Candies, a cherished Austin institution, is closing after 141 years, marking the end of a significant family legacy in the community. The beloved candy store chain announced its closure on April 24, 2026, citing unprecedented economic pressures and current market conditions.
The Round Rock location closed on the same day. The flagship store in Austin, which has been operating since 1956, has served generations of customers who fondly remember its signature Texas Chewie Pecan Praline—first produced in 1892 and quickly becoming the company’s bestseller.
Founded in 1885 as the Red Front Candy Factory by William Wirt Lamme, Lammes Candies has been a family-owned business since its inception. Over the years, it has become a staple of Austin’s history, celebrating local flavors and traditions that have delighted sweet tooths for over a century.
The decision to close was not made lightly. As the ownership team stated, “This was not an easy decision.” They expressed deep gratitude for the support from the community throughout their long history.
Lana Schmidt, a longtime customer and local resident, shared her sentiments: “I think we’ve built a legacy for the community.” Many residents echoed her feelings as they reminisced about special moments spent at Lammes Candies.
The closure leaves a notable void in Austin’s landscape. “You can’t buy the smell online. I suggest you walk in the door,” said one loyal patron who visited regularly to enjoy both the sweets and the atmosphere.
As Lammes Candies turns off its lights for the final time, it marks not just an end but also an era of fond memories and cherished traditions that will linger in the hearts of many Austinites.
