A fire broke out at the Fuyao Glass America plant in Moraine, Ohio, around 8:30 p.m. on March 22, 2026, causing significant disruption at the facility. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, as employees swiftly implemented an emergency response plan, ensuring everyone was evacuated safely.
The fire originated on the roof of the building, where new manufacturing lines were being established. Firefighters faced challenging conditions, including heavy winds gusting up to 40 mph, which stoked the flames. Operations were temporarily suspended due to strong storms and lightning in the area, complicating the firefighting efforts.
Fire crews utilized thousands of gallons of water to combat the blaze, and electric service was cut to the plant to assist in their efforts. Residents nearby reported a strong chemical smell and visible smoke, raising concerns within the community. Tim Turpin, a local resident, noted, “There’s a haze in the air, and a really strong chemical smell,” while his neighbor, Sue Turpin, added, “And we can smell it in our house.”
Fuyao Glass America, which opened its first North American facility in Moraine in 2016, employs over 2,000 people. The plant is significant to the local economy, producing 30% of all automotive glass in the U.S. In 2025, the facility expanded by adding 600,000 square feet of production space, a testament to its growth and importance in the industry.
Doug Hatcher, a representative of the firefighting team, praised the crews for their efforts under tough conditions, stating, “Fire crews did a good job under tough conditions.” The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and details remain unconfirmed as authorities work to determine what led to this incident.
