Flash Flood Warnings in Effect
“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” warns the National Weather Service (NWS), as flash flood warnings are issued for several regions, including Macon County, Illinois, and parts of North Texas. The warnings come in response to significant rainfall that has already impacted these areas.
A Flash Flood Warning was issued for parts of Macon County, Illinois, effective until 7 a.m. CDT on Wednesday. Approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of rain had already fallen, with another inch expected around Decatur, Illinois. Flooding has been reported near Water and Main Streets in downtown Decatur, raising concerns for local residents and businesses.
Warnings Extend to North Texas
In North Texas, a flash flood warning was issued for Tarrant, Denton, Dallas, and Collin counties, set to remain in effect until 3 a.m. This warning follows similar concerns as heavy rains have led to rising water levels in the region. The NWS has advised residents to remain vigilant and avoid driving through flooded areas, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
Indiana’s Rising River Levels
Meanwhile, the NWS issued a flood warning for Branch and St. Joseph counties in Indiana at 9:28 p.m. on March 10. Minor flooding is forecast for the Saint Joseph River in Michigan at Three Rivers. The river is expected to rise above flood stage early tomorrow afternoon, reaching 7.3 feet, just above the flood stage of 7 feet. At 8:45 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, the river stage was recorded at 6.9 feet, indicating a rapid increase in water levels.
As the situation develops, residents in affected areas are urged to stay informed and heed local advisories. Flash flooding can occur quickly, particularly near small creeks and streams, along highways and streets, around underpasses, and in areas that do not drain well.
Safety Precautions
The NWS emphasizes the importance of safety during these weather events. The phrase “Turn around, don’t drown” serves as a critical reminder for those who may encounter flooded roads. The agency continues to stress that most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles, highlighting the dangers of attempting to navigate through flooded areas.
As the rain continues, residents are encouraged to monitor local weather reports and updates from the NWS. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the flooding and its impact on local infrastructure and communities.
With heavy rains expected to persist, authorities are on alert, and further updates will be provided as conditions evolve. Residents are advised to prepare for potential evacuations and to have emergency plans in place as the situation develops.
