Candice Bergen reflects on turning 80
“I’m just in total denial. I don’t even want to talk about it. Being 80 is just unfathomable to me,” said Candice Bergen as she approaches her milestone birthday on May 9, 2024.
As Bergen prepares to celebrate this significant occasion, she has had a remarkable career that spans nearly seven decades, with nearly 70 film and television credits to her name. Her work has earned her five Emmy Awards, solidifying her status as a television icon.
Bergen’s personal life has also been a subject of interest. She has been married twice, first to Louis Malle, who passed away in 1995, and later to Marshall Rose, who died in 2025 from Parkinson’s disease. Bergen’s daughter, Chloe Malle, now 40, is the head of editorial content at Vogue and has spoken highly of her mother, stating, “I think she’s wonderful with her kids, and she’s very lucky because she chose a great husband [Graham Albert], who is a fantastic father.”
In addition to her professional achievements, Bergen is also a grandmother to two grandchildren who affectionately call her ‘Toto.’ She maintains an active lifestyle, working out with a trainer five days a week.
Currently, Bergen guest-stars as Constance Bishop in the Apple TV series “Shrinking,” where her character is described as a doting mother and a sassy mother-in-law. Her performance has garnered praise from co-stars, including Christa Miller, who noted, “The writers would come on set to see us working together because it was so hysterical.”
As Bergen approaches this new chapter in her life, she continues to be celebrated not only for her contributions to television but also for her enduring presence in the industry. Ted McGinley, a fellow actor, remarked, “I consider Candice to be a TV legend. I mean, she is legendary. She has been for years a massive force in television, and she is so iconic.”
With her 80th birthday on the horizon, Bergen’s reflections on her life and career resonate deeply with fans and colleagues alike, marking a significant moment in the life of a beloved actress.
