Tommy DeCarlo’s Passing
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, 9 March 2026,” announced his family, marking a significant loss for the Boston band and its fans.
DeCarlo, who was born and raised in Utica, New York, joined the Boston band in 2007 after the tragic death of original frontman Brad Delp. He quickly became a beloved figure in the rock music scene, contributing to the band’s legacy with his powerful vocals.
Diagnosed with brain cancer in September 2025, DeCarlo fought bravely against the illness. He was 60 years old at the time of his passing, leaving behind a legacy that includes his work on Boston’s 2013 album, Life, Love & Hope.
Tom Scholz, the founder of Boston and the main songwriter, expressed his admiration for DeCarlo, stating, “I haven’t heard anyone else sing like that in 35 years.” This sentiment reflects the deep respect and affection the band had for him.
Scholz further remarked, “Tommy was a competitive athlete and yet a gentle soul who his son and many others remember as a sweet man who did not deserve to be cut down at such a young age.” This highlights DeCarlo’s character beyond his musical talent.
Before joining Boston, DeCarlo was a lifelong fan of the band, which made his journey from fan to frontman all the more poignant. He also formed the band Decarlo with his son in 2012, showcasing his passion for music.
Since its founding in 1975, the Boston band has sold over 50 million albums globally, solidifying its place in rock history. The band last toured in 2017, leaving fans eager for future performances.
As the music community mourns the loss of Tommy DeCarlo, his contributions to the Boston band and the rock genre will not be forgotten. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any future plans for the band following this significant loss.
