Asterisk Talley, a 17-year-old amateur golfer from Chowchilla, California, entered the Augusta National Women’s Amateur with high hopes, holding a one-shot lead going into the final round. Known for her exceptional skills, Talley had previously played two bogey-free rounds at Champions Retreat, setting the stage for an exciting finish.
However, the final round proved challenging for Talley. She finished with a score of 75, resulting in a five-way tie for fourth place. A quadruple-bogey 7 on the par-3 12th hole marked a significant turning point in her round, as did her first bogey of the tournament on the par-4 11th hole.
Despite the setbacks, Talley started strong, birdieing three of her opening four holes. Yet, the back nine was difficult, as she carded a total of 42 strokes. After the round, Talley expressed her emotions, stating, “I’m just a little emotional, not only because I didn’t get it done today, but also just everyone is so supportive.”
Talley received comfort from golf legends Bryson DeChambeau and Annika Sorenstam, who offered words of encouragement. DeChambeau remarked, “The way it turned out, it’s not going to define her,” highlighting the resilience and potential Talley possesses.
Reflecting on her experience, Talley emphasized that it does not define her as a golfer. She stated, “She was the best player ever. Her telling me I’m the best player out here is pretty special,” referring to Sorenstam’s praise.
As the No. 1 junior golfer in the world and the 2025 ANWA runner-up, Talley has a bright future ahead. Her journey at Augusta National, filled with both triumphs and challenges, showcases her determination and talent.
Talley expressed gratitude for the support she received throughout the tournament, demonstrating the strong community surrounding her. As she moves forward, observers are eager to see how this experience shapes her career in the world of golf.
